Lesson 1 Reflection

  1. Instructional Decisions/Teaching (InTask Standard # 9): Discuss the implementation process and describe
    • What went well and what didn't go well during the implementation of your lesson?
I believe my lesson went very well. The students understood the lesson I was teaching and seemed to have fun doing it. They loved going outside and had fun connecting their knowledge in the class to their world. Something that I think I could have done better was explain how they should use Pixie before I set them to it. Because of this I had to go around to each student and explain how to upload the picture and that they had to ‘glue’ it before they could draw on it. This worked fine for 3 students, but if it was a full class I would have been struggling.

    • How well was the alignment to objectives and standards maintained?
I believe my lesson aligned perfectly with the objectives and standards. I was able to check if my student could name 80% of the shapes correctly by the Pixie assignment they turned in. And my lesson aligned with the standards because the students were able to identify shapes of different sizes and orientation by finding shapes in the world around them.

    • Describe any modifications made during the implementation of the lesson
As I started the lesson I decided to move playing ISPY to the end of the lesson if we had time. I could tell by the pacing that we probably would not have time so I adjusted and cut what I thought was least important. Other then that the lesson went to plan.

  2. Mechanics:
    • What technologies did I use (for the teacher and the learner)? How were the technologies used (by whom and in what manner)?
I used the smart board to present the different shapes on PowerPoint and to explain how a shape can also be another object name (such as a clock is also a circle). I also used Pixie to show the students on the smart board what I wanted their finished work to look like. Both of these I created before the lesson was started. The students used digital cameras to take pictures of shapes they found outside and in the hallway. From there they put the SD card in the computer and uploaded them to Pixie. On Pixie they created their finished project of outlining the shapes and writing a short sentence about the picture.

    • My lesson was within the correct time frame
My lesson was within the correct time frame because I modified it as I went through the lesson. I planned on purpose a little more then I thought we could get through in case the students went through the lesson faster then I originally thought they would. But as I started implementing the lesson I found that the one extra activity would put me over time and the students would not be able to finish their final project. So I cut out that activity, the ISPY, and my lesson ended right on time.

  3. Assessment of Learning (InTask Standard # 6): Refer to Assessing Student Learning

  4.

    • Include at least 2 digital artifacts that demonstrate what you or your students (peers) have created as a result of your lesson
      As seen above
    • Describe your students' level of success in achieving the standards and objectives for your lesson based on your assessment
All three of my students achieved higher then the objective, they all identified the 5 correct shapes they found outside with a 100% accuracy. I know this because they turned in a Pixie file to my email. Included was a picture per slide, with the picture outlined, and a sentence saying what they picture was of and what shape the picture was.  Finding the shapes outside and correctly naming them they satisfied the standards they needed to.

    • Describe the level of success you had in teaching the lesson
      • How do your individual reflections support this?
I believe my lesson was very successful. Looking back there were a few things I would have done differently in explaining more, but that is how it is with any lesson. I think I created a lesson that was fun, integrated technology well, and covered the standards and objectives effectively.

      • How do the comments from your classmates support this?
The comments thought overall I was very prepared to teach the lesson and was very successful in supporting the students in learning the content. A comment was that I should have explained and demonstrated what I wanted the students to do instead of just telling them, which I agree. Another suggestion was to print out directions for the students as supplementary material. They thought I was very good at talking to each student to make sure they understood the activity and helped with any questions they had. Overall they all thought I did very well and only had slight suggestions, of which I have listed, on how I could have improved.
